is Professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature at The University of Tulsa. His research and publications focus on diverse aspects of poetry and performance, and expressions of Indigenous and African cultures, in Latin American literature, particularly Brazil, Chile, and Mexico.

grande como los maizales,
cabal titipuchal de "-atles"
y un buen retechorro de "-etles."

Echale chicozapote,
cacahuate, chocolate,
aguacate, jitomate,
tejocote al tejolote.

Muélele, muélele, ¡dale!
Muélele, muélele, ¡vale!

Agrégale unos chayotes,
nopales, ejotes, chiles,
epazote con quelites,
camotes, nanches, elotes.

Echale al Valle de Anáhuac,
grande como un mundo entero,
todas las luces del cielo,
todos los gustos del náhuatl.

Muélele, muélele, ¡sale!
Muélele, muélele, ¡chale!
